Scots Team Take On Killer Bugs

ATEAM of scientists in Edinburgh is tackling the dangerous infections which sometimes kill after childbirth or bowel surgery. Biologists at the University of Edinburgh have begun genetic trials to understand better how the bacterium responsible for these infections - called Bacteroides fragilis - fools the body's defences. The research could pave the way for new treatments.

Walk for Breast Cancer

AFTER a group of friends took part in a sponsored walk for breast cancer in England they decided to do something similar back home in Scotland. The result was last year's Twilight Walk, which raised pounds-80,000. Now the group, who formed charity Breast Foot Forward, are repeating the event on Saturday and hope to raise even more cash. Susan Withers, a trustee of the charity, said they already have 1000 men and women signed up to do either the half- or quarter-mile walk.
