* Glenn Loovens, the Celtic defender, is facing up to four weeks out after sustaining a hamstring injury during a friendly defeat by Swansea City last night. The Dutchman had started in his side's last two matches alongside new signing Kelvin Wilson and his injury will come as a huge blow to Neil Lennon.
we have been attempting to get players in, but we haven't managed to get as many in as we would have liked. "We will continue to search and press for new talent to come to the club."
Red Cards and Failed Transfers Leave Manager High and Dry
Ally McCOIST was impassive. With his arms folded, and a stony look on his face, he watched Steven Whittaker walk from the field after being shown a red card. Rangers had been in control of this Champions League qualifying round tie, playing at a tempo and an intensity that was troubling Malmo, only for a moment of rashness by Whittaker to disrupt the optimism the away side had built up. By crassly throwing the ball at the grounded Jimmy Durmaz, the full- back suddenly compromised all of McCoi...
Zaliukas Surprised That Form Blamed for Jefferies Sacking
Marius Zaliukas, the Hearts captain, last night spoke of his surprise, both at Jim Jefferies' departure and the rationale given by countryman Vladimir Romanov for it. The club's controversial owner last night insisted that "only fools and idiots would not raise questions and suspicions" after the club recorded only one competitive win in 15 games either side of the close season. However, ahead of tonight's Europa League third qualifying round, second leg against Paksi SE, Zaliukas said last n...
Paksi Not in Capital to Act As Tourists
SCOTLAND'S capital was bathed in the summer sunshine yesterday but Karoly Kis, the Paksi coach, reminded everyone that his team had not travelled to Edinburgh as tourists. The Hungarian side conceded an away goal in their Europa League third round qualifying tie against Hearts last Thursday but Kis was insistent that his side had not travelled to Scotland to make up the numbers.
Stepping Into the Line of Fire
IT was the Portuguese inquisition. Managers' inaugural addresses to the media can be insipid, chummy affairs but Paulo Sergio faced a brutal barrage of questions yesterday as he was announced as the 11th Hearts manager in Vladimir Romanov's six years in charge at Tynecastle. The 43-year-old may in time become Vladimir's latest victim, but it was hardly his fault that a club legend had been disposed in such clinical fashion. Yesterday, at least, he had a disarming answer at the ready for every...

Barrowman Finally Ready to Set Down Roots in Dunfermline
ANDY BARROWMAN spent yesterday unpacking boxes, preparing to settle in to yet another new home. It is not a new experience for the striker who, in an itinerant career, has now represented 10 clubs in eight years. He harbours no regrets about what has gone before - lodging each experience, good or bad, in the memory banks for future use - but believes, at the age of 26, the time has come to put down roots. Barrowman flourished during two spells with Ross County, either side of an inauspicious ...

Sfa Under Friendly Fire While World Cup Fixtures Delayed
Gustavo Poyet, the Brighton manager, has complained about the SFA after losing Craig Mackail-Smith for Tuesday's Carling Cup tie with Gillingham due to his call-up for Wednesday's friendly with Denmark. "It's not very clever to put an international game in the middle of a week when you have a cup game," he said. "It would be very disappointing if he goes to Scotland, misses the Gillingham game and doesn't play - so it's up to the manager."
St Johnstone Deny Making an Offer for Unsettled Gibson
DEREK McInnes, the St Johnstone manager, has refuted the suggestion he has bid for Willie Gibson. The winger is unsettled at Crawley Town and is eager to find a club back in Scotland. St Johnstone have been credited with interest in the Scot, but McInnes, while not denying he was keeping tabs on the situation, denied he had placed an offer.

; 'I Think About the Pga Cup Every Day'
The PGA Cup may not have quite the same glitz and glamour of the Ryder Cup but for Russell Weir, the Dunoon veteran who will skipper GB&I in next month's meeting with the USA, the biennial contest induces as just much passion. Just like Colin Montgomerie during his time as European Ryder Cup captain, Weir has immersed himself in the position and has admitted, as Monty did, that the role of leader has become all-consuming.
