An 85% turnout was claimed yesterday by the Educational Institute of Scotland in the national strike. The union said it was a demonstration of a determination "to win peace". However, the 85% claim from EIS assistant secretary Mr Dennis Sullivan did not equate with reports of relatively moderate levels of teachers out on strike from Scottish local authorities. Strathclyde said 60% of teachers went on strike. Lothian reported 57%; Grampian 55% of secondary and 50% of primary teachers; and Tayside 47% of all teachers. The highest strike turnout was reported by Central, which said 64% of its teaching force did not turn up for work.See the full content of this document
