GROTTY stations, dirty trains and other passenger irritants could cost First ScotRail up to [pounds]8.7m a year under a new inspection regime.

A team of inspectors will monitor 39 different standards on a four-week cycle, including graffiti, toilets, litter and lighting, the Scottish Executive said yesterday.
