ABBEY National and Sant-ander Central Hispano, Spain's biggest bank, are not in takeover talks, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Shares in Abbey rose sharply in early trade yesterday following weekend reports that Santander could be about to rekindle its interest in acquiring the former building society. One source said: "No contacts exist between Abbey and Santander on a possible operation."
