WELL done and keep up the good work. That is the message for thousands of young Scots today who discovered how they had performed in this year's Higher and Standard Grade examinations. Figures released by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) yesterday indicate that most candidates could look forward to a red-letter day this morning. More than 71- percent of pupils passed theirHighers, a rise of 0.5 of a percentage point on last year. Standard Grade passes went up from 97.2- percent to 97.3- percent.
Yet there is no room for resting on laurels. That approach breeds complacency and, potentially, falling standards. To guard against that possibility, and to produce the opposite result, the examination system and the courses that prepare pupils for it must be reviewed to expose weaknesses and highlight strengths.
