Fresh back from Namibia, Duncan Weir, the former Scottish boys' champion who is now director of golf development for the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, draws on a football allusion to describe the state of the courses in some of the newer countries.

"Most are what I would call jumpers-for-goalposts golf, really; golf of sorts," he said while back this week for the R&A's 250th birthday yesterday. As he spoke, he was at HQ, overlooking the Tom Morris Green on the Old Course, where the only jumpers in sight were of the Pringle variety.
