IN THE quest to name the one item of technology which has most transformed people's lives, the washing machine must surely get a look in. But today most of us have no remembrance of imprisonment at the sink, that unmitigated chapped-hands drudgery endured by women before the magic words, "spin" and "tumble dry" turned "cleanliness is next to godliness" into the mantra, "whiter than white". So, forget the symbolic burning of bras - the washing machine was the first practical step in the race to women's liberation.

Yet how many will vote for this gleaming appliance in the survey now being compiled by You And Yours ? (Radio 4, daily). Nominations will be taken until April 15 and can be made via the BBC website or Radio 4's Actionline (0800 044 044). On May 4, Lord Alec Broers, this year's Reith lecturer, will announce the winner. In the meantime this week's listeners heard the first of his five addresses on The Triumph of Technology.
