TONY Blair will stand down as an MP at the next general election, according to his longstanding party agent.

Just 24 hours after Downing Street sought to pour cold water on speculation that the prime minister would not stay on as an MP after giving up his post at No 10, John Burton, his constituency agent in Sedgefield and one of Mr Blair's closest friends and political allies, said: "He has spoken to me about it and, as far as I know, he is not going to stand.
