IN the end, the fear factor favoured George Walker Bush. His record vote was a ringing endorsement of the policies he pursued in his first term, particularly on the war on terror and the military campaign in Iraq. However, the key question is,where will he go from here?

Optimists will hope the re-election of the incumbent will lead to a rapprochement between America and Europe, that bygones will be bygones and a warmer, more productive relationship will be forged.
