AN air ambulance which crashed into the sea off the west coast of Scotland yesterday suffered such a sudden catastrophe that the pilot did not have time to send a Mayday.

The aircraft, carrying a pilot and a paramedic, simply disappeared from air traffic radar screens, an official involved in the search said yesterday.
