SHARES in British Airways took off in London trading yesterday after the UK flag carrier won US antitrust approval for an alliance with American Airlines that will lift earnings from the world's most lucrative travel market.

British Airways advanced 5.1p to 200.6p - a gain of 2.6% - after the US Transportation Department allowed the carrier and its Fort Worth, Texas-based partner to jointly price, market and schedule flights across the North Atlantic. The shares rose by nearly 6% at one stage.
