Neil Ferguson expresses his relief that we have a Scottish Government "sensible enough to be against the unprofitable"' Glasgow Airport Rail Link, or Garl (Letters, June 11).

However, his gratitude is misdirected. By all the accepted standards of infrastructure investment appraisal Garl was always profitable, recording a benefit to cost ratio (BCR) higher than that of the Scottish Government's current flagship project of the Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Projects (EGIP). Even with Garl burdening the taxpayer with increased costs, it was still showing a positive BCR.
