ALAN Bloom bred or named 170 plants, wrote 27 books, and created an extraordinary garden at Bressingham, Norfolk. He opened a steam railway, and cheerfully dressed down with long hair swept to a ponytail.

Bloom was passionate about plants. He also loved steampowered machinery, giving home to what at one time was the largest collection of steam in Europe outside York Railway Museum.
