TREE and plant nursery Alba Trees, one of Scotland's smallest quoted companies, has trebled its profits despite a 10per cent increase in labour costs stemming partly from the introduction of the national minimum wage.

The Gladsmuir, East Lothian firm, which is traded on the junior market Ofex, posted a pre-tax surplus of [pounds]147,284 in 2004, up from [pounds]48,953 the previous year. Sales climbed 11per cent to [pounds]1.59m.
