Summary

Alexandra Ripley, the prolific historical fiction writer best known for Scarlett, the official sequel to Gone With the Wind, has died at her home in Richmond, Virginia, aged 70.

The estate of Gone With the Wind author Margaret Mitchell picked Ripley to write Scarlett. The decision to go ahead with the project at all was controversial, since the original author had always steadfastly refused to write a sequel. She died in 1949, but it was 40 years before the sequel was published.
