George Osborne's oft-repeated claim that "we are all in this together" always rung hollow. If further proof were needed that not everyone is forcibly conscripted into "Austerity Britain", take a look at yesterday's spectacular results from the Somerset-based company Mulberry. It makes handbags that hang from the elbows of people like Cheryl Cole. Prices start at pound(s)775.

Profits at the 40-year old company spectacularly bucked a gloomy retail marketplace with a jump of 358% to pound(s)23.3m. The Mulberry story is not simply about growth in Asian markets. Like- for-like sales were up around 40% in the UK. There are similar stories for sports cars, premium whisky brands and the rise and rise of designer labels like Burberry and Prada. At the very top of the income scale, as Harold Macmillan famously quipped, they have "never had it so good".
