The Scottish Ambulance Service says it is important that ambulance crews are rested. "Given that we are an emergency service, this can at times be challenging," the organisation adds, justifying the need for flexible breaks.

The frustration of workers is understandable. The truth is that they are not classed as an emergency service for the purposes of pay and pensions, merely as an "essential" one, like gas or electricity.
