Dana Petroleum and Venture Production confirmed they were in merger talks to create the biggest North Sea independent in terms of production, but analysts said the two could struggle to agree a deal.

While the idea of combining the Aberdeen-based minnows into a (pounds) 400m outfit capable of attracting wider stock market support makes apparent sense, experts said the competing claims of the two sides' shareholders and management could be irreconcilable.
