IT is no coincidence that Annabel Goldie unveiled the Scottish Tory manifesto in Melrose, in the heart of the constituency that tops their list of targets north of the border.

Historically, the Borders towns of Hawick, Jedburgh, Melrose and Kelso, famed for their ancient abbeys, textiles, and rugby teams, have been safe territory for the Liberal Democrats. However, having taken the seat for the Scottish Parliament, the Tories predict the area is ready for change.
