Andrew "Drew" Slidders Todd, who became editor of BBC TV News in London, with a final posting as temporary controller of BBC Scotland, was born in Dundee, the son of a docker, who unloaded jute for the mills. He left Morgan Academy at 15 and joined D C Thomson as a messenger boy in 1934 during the Depression, and quickly moved on to the newsdesk at the Evening Telegraph.

On the outbreak of war, he joined up, first with the Black Watch and then with 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. He had a final rank of major and eventually wrote a history of the battalion. He was twice mentioned in dispatches during his service, which included being in the desert with the 8th Army, through Sicily and Normandy to the advance to the Rhine.
