MATTHEW Barrett, the chief executive of Barclays who outraged consumers last October by saying he never borrowed on credit cards because it was too expensive, banked a (pounds) 2m rise in pay and benefits to (pounds) 4.9m in 2003.

The award outstrips the (pounds) 2.15m earned by Sir John Bond, chairman of HSBC, Britain's biggest bank, and the (pounds) 3.5m reputedly pocketed last year by Fred Goodwin, chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland.
