AN animal shelter could be forced to close its doors to new admissions for the first time in its 127-year history after a surge in people ditching their pets because of the recession.

The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home warned it is already close to capacity, dealing with some 90 cats and dogs, the largest number for a decade.
