ANNE LAING is indulging in recollection. She shares the memory of sunny afternoons idling alongside her father as he speared golf balls through the Dunbartonshire sky, the light glinting against the club the only respite from the tedium of a game apparently designed for those beyond more active sporting pursuits.

As a promising athlete and exciting badminton talent, the 14- year-old was unconvinced this game - one none of her female peers were involved in - was worth consideration. Then she picked up a club. "I hit a ball and thought 'oh, that worked quite well'," she explains, the clarity of the moment undimmed by the passing of two decades and a subsequently successful golf career.
