I COULDN'T help be struck by the sheer hypocrisy of the first minister 's clear misuse of public funds to help the struggling Labour Party campaign in the Western Isles. While Mr McConnell is busy touring around at public expense with Labour Party candidates in tow, his officials in Edinburgh are simultaneously issuing diktats to public bodies telling them not to facilitate meetings and visits by opposition MSPs.
For months now I have been campaigning hard on the issue of maintaining cottage hospitals in the Scottish Borders and had intimated long before the UK election was ever called that I wanted to conduct a fact-finding tour of cottage hospitals in the region. After some delay I was finally notified by NHS Borders that following advice from officials at the Scottish Executive I would no longer be permitted to conduct this visit. I then spoke with officials at the Scottish Parliament who advised me that there was no legal basis for such advice being issued by the Scottish Executive and after I challenged NHS Borders they did, to their credit, back down.See the full content of this document
