YASSER Arafat, the Palestinian president, said yesterday he would never give up the right of return of the hundreds of thousands of his people who fled or were forced out of their homes during the 1948 Middle East war, and their descendants, about four million people.

His comments came after George W Bush said Israel would not have to give back all the West Bank or accept Palestinian refugees as part of a final Middle East peace deal.
