THEY are usually restricted to a few screenings at arthouse cinemas, squeezed out of the multiplex schedules by the big Hollywood blockbusters.

But now independent and foreign language films are to be opened up to a whole new audience as a result of digital technology being installed in more than 200 cinemas in the UK, including 16 in Scotland.
