It began as essentially a folk festival but now Celtic Connections looms larger than ever at the start of every year as a treat for music fans of almost every persuasion. Long past the stage where it had to justify the Celtic connection of every guest, under the adventurous guidance of director Donald Shaw, the festival has made Glasgow the place where, in January, you're as likely to be wowed by a Cuban jazz pianist - or a mobile party from Senegal or a Tamla Motown legend - as by any amount of fiddling, piping and accordion-playing talent.

Its Celtic roots are still showing prominently: in celebrations such as Lochaber Gold (January 20) and Box & Fiddle Night (January 24); in honoraria, including tributes to Gerry Rafferty (January 22 & 23) and Ray Fisher (January 22); and in concerts that convene chief instigators of the current folk revival, like the Donal Lunny, Liam O Flynn, Andy Irvine and Paddy Glackin extravaganza (January 31) - these all being the sorts of events that Celtic Connections does so well.
