AS the US Olympic trials drew to a close last night in Sacramento, the sport was struggling to grasp the scale of doping damage to American athletics.

Marion Jones, under investigation by the US Anti-Doping Agency, will not defend either of her Olympic sprint titles in Athens. She withdrew from the 200 metres semi-finals, citing "fatigue," and can be certain only of a place in the long jump.
