THE attorney general yesterday told a public inquiry into the sinking a trawler in 1974 with the loss of 36 men that there was no evidence the vessel was involved in spying for the Ministry of Defence.

Lord Goldsmith was opening a new inquiry into the 30-year-old mystery of what happened to the Hull-based Gaul, which was lost in heavy seas in the Barents Sea, off the northern tip of Norway.
