CONSPIRACY theorists might be interested to note that the only two 2004 Ryder Cup absentees for the Masters that begins in just under a fortnight are Colin Montgomerie and Paul McGinley. They are, remarkably, the players who holed the winnings putts for Europe in the last two contests against the US.

Despite their record 18 1/2-91/2 defeat last September at Oakland Hills, every single member of the 12-man US Ryder Cup team has a start in the first major championship of the season and you have to wonder if the Augusta National Golf Club have their criteria for invitations as up to date as they could be.
