DICK Olver, chairman of BAE Systems, yesterday sought to reassure members of the defence company's pension scheme following claims at its annual meeting that a pounds-4.3bn deficit was "far in excess" of other UK firms.

Referring to the deficit listed under UK accounting rules, Olver said the figure was just a snapshot position and did not allow the company to consolidate future monies or recognise future growth in the fund.
