THIS is not how Sir David Murray would have envisaged bowing out at Rangers after 20 years. The timing of last week's announcement confirming Alastair Johnston as the new chairman demonstrated that one of the most enjoyable aspects of the job had become an intolerable chore.

In more bountiful times, Murray loved nothing more than to pluck a player of pedigree from one of Europe's leading clubs and present him to his manager and an adoring public before the start of a title defence. In the final week of this summer's transfer window, with the champions having failed to sign a single player and losing 11, news of his decision to stand down for a second time in seven years confirmed the depressing reality for a club that should be in clover after a favourable Champions League draw.
