TWO of Britain's biggest banks reported combined profits of almost GBP6bn for the first half of 2009 yesterday in a sign that the City is booming again .

The huge turnaround by Barclays and HSBC, which both reported six- month profits of close to GBP3bn less than a year after the taxpayer had to step in to bail out the banking system, added fuel to the row over bank bonuses and regulation of the financial sector.
