ISN'T it time that the banks lightened up on the identity checks which they seem to be obsessed with? I know they blame the government for the necessity but I don't buy that. It is the banks themselves who determine the extent to which they are imposed. They must surely be aware that they are time-consuming of computer use, bank staff and customer alike and are a source of irritation to all concerned. In some circumstances they may be justifable but in others they are clearly not.

Take, for instance, a situation I find myself in frequently. I operate two telephone bank accounts with the same office and have occasion from time to time to transfer money from one to the other. In addition to quoting from my security number to identify me, and obviously account numbers, I am posed a number of other questions such as date of birth, home phone number, last school, etc. What is the point? I am transferring from an account in my name to another in my name. Where is the risk?
