ON a night marked by the crashing fall of two icons, steeplechaser Saif Saaeed Shaheen survived as the supreme champion. He won gold in 8min 13.31sec, thanks to a searing final lap of 57.68 seconds.

Yet the once-invicible Felix Sanchez and Maria Mutola, the long- time king and queen of the 400m hurdles and 800 metres, both of them world champions in 2001 and 2003, saw their reigns consigned to history on a torrential night in Helsinki.
