COALITION troops were engaged on several fronts against an enemy they did not expect in Iraq yesterday - Shi'ites who were downtrodden during Saddam Hussein's brutal regime.

Followers of Moqtada al Sadr, the radical Shi'ite cleric, fought pitched battles with allied forces on several fronts and vowed to pursue an uprising that has led to 30 coalition troops and more than 130 Iraqis being killed since Sunday.
