Summary

I REFER to the coverage of South Lanarkshire Council's decision to discontinue funding support for Community Carers Cambuslang and Rutherglen ("Anger as cuts lead to care service closure", The Herald, March 10). My wife has enjoyed the services of CCCR for the last five years. She has suffered from MS for more than 40 years and throughout that period has fought every inch of the way to lead an active and purposeful life, contributing to the development of both her family and the local community. She now needs reciprocal support. She receives that from her family and friends but sadly has been sidelined by SLC's decision to dispense with the services of CCCR.

Despite assurances that there would be a seamless join between the end of CCCR's services and the beginning of personal care delivered by the council's own staff, it looks like there are not enough trained staff within the council to provide that service. Indeed South Lanarkshire Council is now in a position where it must subcontract support and care services to other providers from within the private sector rather than maintaining the link with CCCR. It does seem a bit like cutting off the nose to spite the face.
