AN opposition candidate was allegedly beaten unconscious while leading a group of his supporters to a rally to protest what the opposition claims was large-scale vote-rigging in yesterday's presidential election.

Thousands of people were gathering on a square in central Minsk in defiance of longtime authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko, who had threatened to use force if the opposition went ahead with the protest.
