Summary
FREE bus travel for the elderly is certainly worthwhile ("Is free bus travel for the elderly worth the GBP185m bill?", The Herald, December 2). It must keep older people from driving their cars some of the time, resulting in less congestion and lower emission rates of polluting fumes. In addition, with more people using public transport, the fixed costs can be shared by a greater number of travellers, thereby reducing the underlying fares for all passengers.
If government cannot afford the cost of for free travel then the scheme should be amended, but not scrapped. One option would be to charge older people a nominal sum for each journey or only charge a proportion of the ticket price for each purchase.See the full content of this document
