DR Araki's experience of Glasgow's bus drivers (Letters, March 13) will come as no surprise to regular bus passengers in the city. There are precious few drivers who give the impression that they enjoy their job or have any appreciation of the concept of public service. But I don't think blame can be attached entirely to the drivers. The operating and social conditions in which they're expected to work are manifestly unenviable.

That operating framework is visibly more stressful than it is for their counterparts in most mainland European cities. For example, as a semi-regular user of Berlin's excellent municipal transport service, I notice significant differences that make the bus driver's job there easier.
