THE Scottish music scene was shocked and saddened at the recent tragic and untimely death of one of its most talented sons, live sound engineer Billy Worton, who died at his home in Tayport, Dundee, following a heart attack. Billy's contribution to Scottish music was widely recognised over many years, where, through his work with some of the biggest names in contemporary Scottish rock, he crafted the anthemic stadium sound which became so synonymous with major bands such as Simple Minds, Big Country and, ultimately, Celtic rock band Runrig, with whom he worked for many years until ill-health forced his premature retirement.

Billy was born in Luanshya, Zambia, where his father, William, a retired Royal Naval lieutenant commander, worked for a large mining company. He had a great fondness for this early part of his life and, despite his great passion and pride for Scotland and all things Scottish, he would often speak fondly of his African birth place.
