THE first day of the nursery nurses' indefinite strike showed early signs of strain yesterday with councils claiming the turnout was "very patchy".

Unison, however, said support from their members was solid and estimated that 4000 were out on strike, the latest move in an increasingly bitter dispute over pay and grading that has lasted almost a year.
