WITH Scotland seeming in a parlous state in Group 5 of the World Cup qualifiers, and Italy due at Hampden Park on Saturday, Walter Smith yesterday took the unusual step of insisting he would shoulder the blame should his team fail to reach the World Cup finals in Germany next summer.
Smith was speaking with three days to go before a match from which, utopian as it may seem, Scotland must emerge with at least a point. Anything less than four points from the imminent double- header against Italy and Norway would seem to spell the end for Smith and his team in the current campaign. Garry O'Connor, the Hibernian striker, yesterday joined Lee McCulloch as a withdrawal, having suffered a recurrence of a back injury.
