Surely the foundation of judicial inquiry should be the evidence? I would be interested to know on what the basis Sheriff Douglas Small was able to say that high-visibility clothing might have avoided the death of Jason MacIntyre, and that all cyclists should wear it, and also helmets ("Widow dismisses key inquiry findings", The Herald, May 21).

I too have been interested in the effectiveness of high visibility clothing for cyclists and have written to a leading road safety scientist and the CTC cycling organisation's campaigns and policy Director to find out more. The answer is that there is no data and the science has not yet been done.
