FAMILIES bracing themselves for the impact of spending cuts are being faced with a hike in the price of food and clothing, putting further pressure on consumer spending.

The cost of clothing soared by 2.8% from July to August, the largest rise for the period since 2001, while bread, cereal and vegetables contributed to a 0.1% increase in food prices in the month, the Office for National Statistics said.
