DAVID Blunkett was locked in an unprecedented legal battle with Humberside Police Authority last night, after it refused to suspend David Westwood, the chief constable severely criticised over the handling of the Soham murder case.

The stand-off coincided with revelations that police had failed to prevent a convicted rapist working as an English teacher in London, despite receiving an inquiry about his sexual past. A senior judge called for an inquiry into the "very worrying" lack of action.
