Q: Who hit pay dirt? A: James Wilson Marshall, a carpenter who found nuggets of gold while building a sawmill near Coloma close to the Sacramento River on January 24, 1848. He went into partnership with John Augustus Sutter, for whom he was working at Sutter's Mill.
