BRUSSELS last night played down talk of a transatlantic trade war after the European Union slapped tariffs on imported American goods that could cost US companies up to (pounds) 200m this year and (pounds) 400m next.

The aim of the trade sanction - the first time the EU has acted in this way - is to force the US Congress to change a law that gives an unfair tax advantage to its country's exporters.
