TELECOMS giant BT has avoided being broken up by promising to offer equal access for competitors to use its network and announcing plans to hive off 30,000 workers into a new distinct division.

The unit, to be called Access Services, will employ around one- third of BT's staff, primarily the engineers who maintain the wires and other technical kit that comprises the so-called "last mile" of the national telecoms network. It is this equipment that enables the connection between houses and businesses and the main BT infrastructure.
